A Short History Of Sportbooks
Gambling is banned in the US except for some states like Nevada. This state has a legal system that allows gambling. There are a lot of licensed sportsbooks in the Nevada casinos. The number of these sportsbooks is about 150. But there is a problem on wagering in these casinos also. Most of these casinos have a common parent company. This leads to same wagering in most of them. So gamblers who like to search for the best price are often disappointed. If you are searching for competitive wagering, then the net is the best place. But Nevada has a lot of history behind the advent of sportsbooks.
Initially the sportsbooks in Nevada were called Turf Clubs. This happened around the 1950s. These Turf Clubs were different from the casinos in the way that they were independent of the casinos. There was an informal agreement between these clubs and the casinos. It was that they would not indulge in the business of the casinos as long as the casinos did not interfere with their sportsbook business. At that point of time, the sportbooks had to pay a heavy tax of 10%. To deal with this, they used to charge a very heavy vigorish from the customers (bettors). A vigorish is the amount charged by a bookmaker for his services.
Then in 1974, the tax rate lowered. It decreased to 2%. It further lowered to 0.25% in 1983. In 1975, another important thing happened that changed the fate of the Turf Clubs. In that year, Frank Rosenthal who ran the Stardust Casino in Nevada brought about a powerful law. He had good connections and convinced them to include the sportsbooks under casinos. From the moment that casinos began incorporating sportsbooks, Turf Clubs were no longer able to survive. All of them eventually closed down. This is how the modern sportsbook came to existence.
Now Nevada Casino Sportsbooks are quite lively in their service. There are a lot of facilities available in a Nevada sportsbook. You have betting windows and big screen televisions on which you can watch matches and bet. Places to sit and watch the matches are present. Then you have very interactive betting stations. There is also the opportunity to judge an odd by virtue of the Odds boards. These are usually computerized helping in your getting a clear picture of the betting situation. Thus Nevada sportsbooks are unique in their own right. This was a short history of the history of Nevada's sportsbooks.
