Some Useful Stuff About Spread Betting

In spread betting the wager's accuracy is of primary importance rather than simple winning or loosing. Payoff depends on wager's accuracy for different types of wagers on the fallout of an event. The result can be anything and there can be a wide range that can be either below or above the spread. Spread betting has picked up in the UK despite its high risks with gamblers swelling to a million. Instead of the Gambling Commission, spread betting in the UK falls under the FSA.

Spread betting may look apparently biased but it was attempted to benefit the two wagering sides. Similar to sports where the strongest team has many backers leaving the weaker opposition with very few to cheer them, spread bettors too favor the stronger team with few betting for the weaker one. Bookmakers create a market by accepting bets from both sides. Bookmakers charge commissions which are their profit and they are not worried unless the bettors on the two sides are not evenly loaded.

Founded in the 40's by a teacher in math from Connecticut, Charles K. McNeil, spread betting only caught on in the UK in the 1980's. He later went on to become a Chicago bookmaker. Usually the North American gamblers bet on the score difference of both the teams wagering it to be more or less than the amount set by the bookmaker. It is something like this. In spread betting the bookmaker touts a 4 point spread, the bettor settles for the one opposite the favorite and if the score and the spread together is more than the score of the favorite, he would win.

To avoid a tie in spread betting, spread bets are usually done in small fractions. In the event of a tie, it is a draw where money is neither won nor lost. But in such cases the bookmakers loose on the spread bets. They don't gain by taking bets from the gamblers as the costs of overhead have to be paid. But to avoid the return of the bet money, journals and publications of sporting events allow early declaration of whether the tie will be considered won or lost.

Sometimes a bet can change the spread to favor the gambler. It is usually done by a pre-set margin where the spread bettor can get additional points. What the bettor gets in turn for a win is less in payout. Again, the gambler can get more for a win with a change in spread without favoring him.
